North Kent Enterprise Zone
Preparations are gathering pace on the newly re-named North Kent Enterprise Zone ahead of its official start on 1 April 2017.
The Enterprise Zone was one of 26 new or extended Zones announced by the Government in November 2015.
Recent milestones for the North Kent Enterprise Zone (NKEZ) include:
- Construction of the access road at Kent Medical Campus;
- Commencement of construction of the Cygnet mental health facility at Kent Medical Campus (see press notice);
- A successful public consultation event exhibiting the commercial development proposals for the Northfleet Riverside East EZ site.
The NKEZ covers three schemes:
- Kent Medical Campus in Maidstone,
- Rochester Airport Technology Park in Medway, and
- Three sites at Ebbsfleet Garden City - Northfleet Riverside East and West, and Northfleet Rise
Between them, these sites will deliver around 230,000m2 of high quality business premises with potential for 9,900 new jobs by 2027, boosting the local economy and employment and training opportunities in Kent and Medway.
Whilst the name may have changed, the focus on innovation remains. The NKEZ is strategically located at the heart of the Kent Innovation Corridor, linking key centres of excellence in life sciences, advanced manufacturing, engineering and digital technologies from Discovery Park on the Kent coast directly into London.
Once operational, from 1 April 2017, the NKEZ will offer great opportunities for commercial property developers and companies wishing to invest in new business premises as well as from start-up and existing companies looking to locate in the Kent Innovation Corridor. Enterprise Zones offer a number of incentives to business occupiers, including business rates discounts worth up to £55,000 per year for five years, to help accelerate investment and growth.
The Zone's Strategic Board brings together representatives from each scheme, the relevant local authorities, Locate in Kent, South East Local Enterprise Partnership, the Higher Education Institutions and TGKP. Each of the component schemes has its own local delivery arrangements. Those partners will continue working closely with site owners and developers over the coming months to determine the best way of progressing developments and securing business occupiers.
