Thames Gateway Kent

Thames Gateway Kent Map

Thames Gateway Kent covers broadly the area east of the M25, bounded to the north by the Thames River and Estuary and to the south by the A2/M2 and the North Downs.  In practice, we include the whole local authority areas of Dartford, Gravesham, Swale and Medway and, since April 2018, Maidstone.  Together these make up TGKP's partnership area of North Kent.

North Kent is also part of the Thames Estuary, which is injecting fresh energy into realising the huge opportunities for good growth in this region of the UK - see The Thames Estuary Context.

The area has many outstanding assets – its heritage, countryside, town centres, riverside and people with a strong identity and pride in their communities.  The majority of North Kent is, in fact, rural and contains some of Kent's most productive agricultural and horticultural land as well as nationally important landscapes and internationally significant wildlife habitats.  Part of the Thames Gateway initiative has been about protecting and enhancing these assets, but its main focus has been on regenerating its former industrial heartlands so as to maximise its economic growth potential.  North Kent offers an excellent location on strategic transport routes, near major UK and European markets, in close proximity to London, with significant quantities of brownfield land ready for redevelopment and a continually developing infrastructure.

Each of the areas in Thames Gateway Kent is developing a distinctive role.

Dartford, Gravesham and Ebbsfleet

Dartford and Gravesend town centres have their own distinct identities and new investment is helping the continuing process of reinvention and revitalisation.  Between these two established towns, Ebbsfleet Garden City is emerging as a new commercial centre and driver for economic and housing growth, focused around the international railway station which provides high speed connection to central London and European capitals.  Adjoining Ebbsfleet, and benefitting from the proximity of the international station, Swanscombe Peninsula has been identified as the potential location for a world-class leisure resort (London Resort).

With its superb riverside developments, historical sites and university campus, Medway's vision is to be a city of learning, creative and cultural industries, tourism and enterprise.  Medway is also a major centre for advanced manufacturing and low carbon technologies, as well as home to major energy, port and logistics facilities on the Hoo Peninsula and Isle of Grain.

As the administrative and business capital of Kent, the town of Maidstone is home to many public services, businesses and a substantial retail and leisure offering. As well as growing its reputation as a place for businesses to start up and grow, Maidstone is developing as a centre for medical and healthcare-related expertise, particularly focused at Kent Medical Campus.

Logistics and science-based industries are emerging as key drivers of growth. The Sheppey Crossing, opened in 2006, has helped unlock the development opportunities at Queenborough and Rushenden on the Isle of Sheppey and provides a vital corridor to the Port of Sheerness.  Kent Science Park, near Sittingbourne, is one of several centres for innovation and growth in knowledge-based industries that form part of a growing 'Innovation Corridor' - see Business Parks & Innovation Centres.

Progress and achievements

Significant central and local government and private sector investment has been made over the last 20 years in a range of initiatives, including brownfield remediation, land assembly, Connectivity & Infrastructure, Environmental Improvements and cultural enhancements, Sports & Leisure facilities, New Communities and town centre regeneration, and better Education & Skills facilities.  The North Kent Enterprise Zone, covering sites in Medway, Maidstone and Ebbsfleet, is just one of many initiatives to stimulate investment and business opportunities.  Together these are transforming the opportunities and offer to businesses, investors and residents in North Kent.  Click on the highlighted links or tabs for more information.
